Fun, friendly and affordable drum lessons for adults, from a pro drummer
If you’re looking to find out just how rewarding, enjoyable and exciting learning to play the drums can be, you’re in the right place.
I’m James, a pro drummer from the UK, and I teach adults from around the world in 1 to 1 online drum lessons.
I know that it can often be intimidating to take up a musical instrument like the drums as an adult, or to revisit music after a long period away.
But don’t worry – in my lessons, I’ll make you feel right at home.
Whether you’re a total beginner or a more developed player, I’d love to help you get the most out of your playing.
I’ve been privileged enough to study under a number of world-class players including session legend Ralph Salmins – who’s playing credits include Stevie Wonder, the London Symphony Orchestra, Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin and James Brown.
My goal as a teacher is to get you playing and having fun as fast as possible, whilst equipping you with the long-term skills to rock any future musical project you might be involved in.
I’ll help you learn your favourite songs, show you the tricks of the trade that make a good drummer a great drummer, and have a great laugh with you doing it.
And as a professional drummer myself, I’ll help you build rock-solid technique that you can take with you far into the future.
Let me let you in on a little secret.
Timing, keeping time and staying in time can be learnt.
Creativity is a muscle that just needs exercising.
These are not just my words – I’ve heard this sentiment time and time again from some of the best drummers and drum teachers in the game.
I wasn’t born with a talent for drumming – I remember my high school teacher criticising me for my lack of timing ability.
Yet with sufficient practice and a plan on how you’re going to improve, you can radically transform your abilities in this area.
You’ll never be criticised for a lack of ability from me, I’ve been there!
My lessons are a kind, friendly place to explore your creativity and enjoy yourself.
As long as you are prepared to put in effort, practice and follow the lessons I suggest, you’ll never be put under pressure to ‘perform’.
If you’d like to read more about my personal drumming journey, you can find out more about me and what I do here.
So what can you expect to learn in our lessons together?
Here’s just some of the most enjoyable and unique skills you’ll be able to get a handle on.
Learn to hear, understand and play the music you love
While I’ll be teaching you individual songs to begin with, you’ll also be able to pick up a far more fundamental skill – how to understand the drum part of any song you love, and then learn to play along.
One of my key goals is to help you learn to play the music you’re most passionate about, whatever style that is.
And if you’re not sure yet what you like, I’m more than happy to help you explore new genres and artists that can ignite your passion for music.
Don’t feel you have to be a ‘musical person’ or have a background in music to sign up for lessons – there’s no need for you to have played a musical instrument before.
As long as you have a curiosity for what the world of drumming might be like and would be willing to dedicate some of your time towards practicing, I would love to invite you to take lessons.
How to turn up to a local jam night and fit right in
Ever wanted to just walk into a bar or a pub, sit down with the band and rock out to a classic tune – even if you’ve never met the musicians before?
Though it sounds like a scene from a movie – if you’ve got a handle on the key skills you need for jamming, you can do this almost anywhere in the world.
I’ll give you the lowdown on everything you need to know – how to steer the band, pick the right song, listen to the other musicians and drive the music forward.
Want to learn to play for hours on end, protect your joints and move effortlessly around the drum set?
Develop effortless technique
Great technique doesn’t just make you sound your best, it makes you feel your best too.
I’m never happier than when I’m playing the drums – but I’m even happier when I feel comfortable and in control.
Professional technique is like adding rocket fuel to your drumming potential: play faster, easier and smarter while creating a far richer and more desirable drum sound.
Learn pro skills that take drum lessons for adults to a new level
There are certain skills that make good drummers into exceptional drummers, and speed up your learning curve at the same time.
You don’t have to learn all or any of these ‘next-level’ skills, but these drumming superpowers will set you up for some of the best experiences of your life.
Soloing – When the lights drop and the spotlight turns to the drummer, bring the house down with a thunderous drum solo.
Gear selection and recording sound – Make your drumming sound current or classic, cool or hot, thunderous or silky pretty.
Chart reading – Sit down and play a song you’ve never heard before, just like that.
Sheet music reading – Sit down and play a song you’ve never heard before, note for note.
I’m so passionate about learning new things and bringing that back to my students.
One of the awesome things about drums is that you can always have a beginner’s mind – there are always people that are better than you, and that’s totally okay.
I’m constantly inspired by the folks that show me what’s possible on the instrument and I’d love to share with you some of the awesome things that they do.
The first lesson is completely free – do get in contact (see email below) even if you don’t have any drumsticks or a pad yet – I can still give you the building blocks you’ll need to start playing some iconic songs and understanding how it all works.
How much do my drum lessons for adults cost?
If you feel drums might be for you after that first lesson, I charge £12.50/$15 for a half hour lesson and £25/$30 for an hour lesson.
